Social Entrepreneurship in Africa

Social entrepreneurship is a way in which people carry out businesses in order to maximize their impact to the society. As a result they are able to solve a particular social concern while at the same time meet the objective of organizational survival or sustainability.

In Africa with enormous social concerns, and the fact that when you talk of social exclusion, these as a concept may easily be overlooked. Governments are struggling and citizens too are struggling. Yet, within this very esence of struggle much is being achieved. People have organized themselves around social concerns to solve a particular problem, at the same time they work to create means and ways to ensure that their efforts could survive so as to be of service in another day. Dont we think that with this type of efforts, Africa could in essence be a really good ground for social entrepreneurship!

An Africa that uses its problems and makes them catalysts for entrepreneurship in the long run! Is there anyone interested in this issue out here. Lets hear your critiques and comments

  1. I have a feeling that Social entrepreneurship as an idea could easily work in Africa. Africa should however be careful so as not to import wholesomely the models proposed in other parts of the world such as Europe, USA and Australia.

  2. Thanks for keeping us updated on your various initiatives.

From your blog I note that you are most likely familiar with the work of Prof. Borzaga on the same subject. We in SOMIRENEC are re-thinking our identity, vision, mission, strategy etc. The end result is to come up with appropriate responses to the challenges of the moment. Social enterprising goes a little further than poverty eradication as this concept as it has been conventionally accepted. I believe social enterprises include wealth and employment creation.

Let us keep in touch as we are very interested in social enterprises. We are currently working on a collaboration between SOMIRENEC and Delft University of Technology in promoting entrepreneurship.

    Good luck in your work.

  3. Greetings and Thanks for the this initiative.
Developing the idea of Social Entrepreneurship in the context of African experiences is really important.
Just as business entrepreneurs work for profit maximization, social entrepreneurs act as the change agents for society, seizing opportunities and improving systems, inventing new approaches and creating sustainable solutions to change society for the better. Social Entrepreneurs are motivated to improve the society and are just as innovative and change oriented as their business counterparts, searching for new and better ways to solve the problems that plague society.

I do think too that social entrepreneurship could contribute in the fight to eradicate poverty.

Lets contribute to this great idea.

  4. This Idea is exellent but it should be reflected on
the ground. Praxis is informed by a good theory.

So in essence what is social entrepreneurship anyway?

  5. This blog is a grand piece of work that will help us organize our ideas on this field. I have appreciated the thoughts of Peter Mbuci on this subject: SE for wealth creation and employment.

I also would like to inform Peter that we in KARDS are very much open to collaboration on this particular aspect. All ideas that can free our communities from the ugly chain of poverty are of interest to us. Social entreprenurship too needs able partners.

All other things considered this blog is could help both SOMIRENEC and KARDS find valuable contributions in this field.
